Free Solar Eclipse Glasses for all RCS students
The Richmond Community School District will follow an asynchronous eLearning Day on Monday, April 8, 2024, due to the Solar Eclipse. RCS teachers have included lessons this week about this historic event and we hope that students and parents can extend the learning together during this day.
Our campus parking lots/buildings will also be closed to visitors on April 8th.
ISO-certified solar eclipse glasses will be handed out on Friday, April 5th to all RCS students. Solar eclipse glasses are thousands of times darker than traditional sunglasses. Thank you to the Wayne County Tourism Center, the Deer Family Fund, the Women's Workshop Richmond, Natco Credit Union, Main Street Richmond, and Communities In Schools for supplying all students with a pair of eclipse glasses. It is important to not use the solar eclipse glasses if they appear to be scratched or damaged. If you would like to opt out of the eclipse glasses giveaway, please contact your child's school.
During the event, the sky will darken as the Moon gradually covers the Sun, leaving only a black disc visible. At totality, the stars will be visible in the daytime sky, and the temperature may drop a few degrees, providing a fascinating and eerie experience. The eclipse will happen in our area between 1:52 p.m.- 4:24 p.m. with 3 minutes and 48 seconds of totality occurring at 3:07 p.m.
